All of our nurseries at Spring follow the Eat Better Start Better Voluntary Food Guidelines for the early years, which means all of our menus are checked and approved by nutritionists – have a wide variety for your children and are highly nutritious!

We thought your children might be missing some of their favourite recipes so we are bringing them to you in our blog and social media and will launch an eBook of our favourite nursery recipes after Easter for you to cook together.

What is a healthy, balanced, nutritious diet for children aged one to four years?

A healthy diet is based on the four food groups below which provide a range of essential nutrients that children need to grow and develop.

  • Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy carbohydrates
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other proteins
  • Dairy and alternatives

One of the first principles of healthy eating is variety, as eating a wider range of different foods provides a better balance of nutrients. Planning meals and snacks to include a variety of food and drinks from these four food groups each day will provide children with the good balance of nutrients they need.

One of our ultimate favourites is our home made fruit bread. It’s great because it tastes SO good, and is done in stages in order to let it prove, so you can break down the recipe into stages for your children. Follow the recipe below or download the recipe card by clicking the button.

Fruit Bread


Serves 10 (30g portions)

  • 150g Bread Flour
  • 1 Yeast Sachet
  • 16g Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 0.75 Teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 0.5 Teaspoon Ginger
  • 0.5g Teaspoon Mixed Spice
  • 80g Dried Fruit (sultanas, raisins)


  • Soak the dried fruit in boiling water for 30 minutes then drain
  • Mix all of the ingredients together to make a dough
  • Leave the mixture to rise in an oiled bowl to double in size, this will take approx. 1 hour
  • Knead the dough back and divide between tins, prove again for another 30 to 40 minutes

Bake on Gas Mark 4 (350F/170C) for 20 – 30 minutes and allow to cool.

Serve sliced, add spread of your choice and cut up carrot sticks, an ideal infant portion size is about 30g.
